Before you’re dragged aboard

Three harbours, three sets of details: here’s how each city’s Pirates ship works.

In short: Before Pirates: arrive 15 minutes early and leave phones in the lockers. There’s no crawling or smoke and it’s fine for kids 9+. Sydney and Melbourne take wheelchairs; in Perth CBD the narrow inner door means a different room suits wheelchair users better.

Timing

Around 90 minutes, dock to dock

  • Turn up 15 minutes before sailing time.
  • One hour below deck.
  • Leave time afterwards for the crew portrait.
  • Book ahead for weekends.
Bring & leave

What to bring aboard

  • Shoes that cover your toes.
  • A pirate costume, if you’ve got one.
  • Nothing that beeps or records: lockers are free.
  • At least one crew member who reads English comfortably.
Perth CBD · Hay Street Mall

Age rules

  • Nine and older is ideal; kids from seven can join as paying members of a family crew.
  • Any crew with a child aged nine or under needs a paying parent or guardian aboard too.
  • Players aged 10–13 can go below deck without a grown-up, provided an adult stays at the venue.
  • Crews made up entirely of 14-year-olds and older don’t need an adult on site.
  • Babies under three can watch from a parent’s arms free of charge at the team’s discretion, and they count towards the crew size.

Accessibility

The first chamber of the Perth CBD ship takes a wheelchair, but the door into the second chamber is too narrow for one. Crews with a wheelchair user should pick another Perth CBD room, or play Pirates in Sydney or Melbourne.

Health & safety

The ship’s articles

  • Every chamber has a panic button. Press it and a gamesmaster unlocks the hatch straight away.
  • The whole ship is on CCTV from start to finish.
  • Nobody boards drunk. Players under the influence of alcohol or drugs won’t be allowed to play.
  • Anything with a screen waits ashore in a free locker.
  • No crawling, no squeezing through tight spaces and no smoke machines anywhere aboard.
  • Light is low below deck, with some darkness and occasional flashes.
  • The story comes through the ship’s speakers in English, and so do your hints: they’re whispered by First Mate Scarface, the one pirate on board who wants you free. One confident reader per crew is enough.
  • Every voyage is private. Nobody joins your crew uninvited.
FAQ

Questions at the dock

How many rooms are there inside Pirates?

Pirates is played across more than one chamber of the ship, starting below deck and moving into the captain’s quarters. The door between the chambers is what makes the Perth CBD version unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Is Pirates scary for children?

No. Pirates is a swashbuckling adventure, not a fright night. It’s dark below deck and the lighting shifts, but kids aged nine and up love it, and younger ones can play with a parent.

How long does a Pirates game take?

Sixty minutes from the moment you’re locked in the hold. Arrive 15 minutes early for the briefing and allow another 15 afterwards, so a Pirates visit runs about 90 minutes.

What age can kids play Pirates?

Nine and up is recommended, and seven- and eight-year-olds can come along as paying players with their family. Children aged nine or under need a paying adult in the game with them.

Can a wheelchair user play Pirates?

In Sydney and Melbourne, yes, with one wheelchair per session (in Melbourne, check the size of the chair with the team). In Perth CBD, the narrow door into the second chamber rules it out, so Escape This suggests a different Perth CBD room.

Is it worth dressing up for Pirates?

Definitely. Hook, Sinbad, Blackbeard and Jack Sparrow all suit the ship, and bonus points go to crews that stay in pirate voice the whole hour. Closed shoes, please.
